The Neurodegeneration with Brain Iron Accumulation (NBIA) held the inaugural Fun 5K Run/Walk for NBIA at Irvine Regional Park in Orange. By supporting this inaugural event, you can directly help families affected by NBIA, and help their organization fund research grants this December to medical researchers who are working to understand, treat and ultimately cure these devastating disorders. Neurodegeneration with Brain Iron Accumulation (NBIA) is a group of rare, progressive, inherited and frequently devastating neurological disorders for which there is no cure.
Aiden Arzate is an 8 year old boy, diagnosed in March 2011 with a form of NBIA known as pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN). To find out there is no cure for this disease and that he may lose his ability to coordinate his body, to eat on his own and to speak, is possibly the worst news any mother could hear. His mother is seeing the effects of this disease on her son daily. A simple thing like holding a cup in his hand or giving a high-five is becoming a challenge for him.
